A snapshot guide to JEA/NSPA Chicago conference

In just a week the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention will be buzzing with student journalists and educators who want to connect, learn and engage. Will you be there for this thrilling event November 1-4 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago?

Attendees are sure to have an incredible time packed with fun and friends while learning from some of the country’s leading experts on all things journalism. From sports reporting and political commentary to multimedia communication and the details of design, there are plenty of sessions to match varied interests and career aspirations.

For example, Laura Schaub, CJE, the national education director for Lifetouch, brings keen insight to her presentation on visual storytelling. If you want to elevate your student publication, video is key. She discusses how professional videographers effectively tell stories through the lens of the camera and how you can, too.

Schaub also teaches two more intriguing sessions: one on design considerations to produce strong visual interest and another on the basics of typography to enhance readability of pages. Check out the conference packet to explore all the exciting sessions and learn more about the featured speakers, social events, contests and more.

One can’t-miss event is the keynote speaker: Pete Souza. Guaranteed to inspire, Souza was the chief official White House photographer for President Barack Obama. His books have been on the New York Times bestseller list and he has won numerous photojournalism awards. Kick off your trip on the right foot with his thought-provoking presentation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

As you settle into the conference, don’t forget to take advantage of the onsite critiques. You can bring the school newspaper, literary magazine, most recent yearbook, URLs of broadcast clips and more to get expert feedback to bring your school’s media to the next level. Don’t delay: Schedule your time for these 30-minute critiques!

Between sessions and events, there are lots of great exhibitor booths to visit. There’s plenty to learn and do, plus fun freebies you won’t want to miss. At Lifetouch booths 107 and 207 you’ll get to chat with creative designers and award-winning photographers, plus use the fun Instagram printing station!

Remember, the conference isn’t all work and no play! Every session and event is meant to be informative and fun while gathering like-minded individuals who want to be the best they can be. Special activities are planned throughout the event to break up your day with enjoyable opportunities to meet others and engage through your passions … and some even offer pizza, movies and trivia.

Finally, for educators and advisers, consider the opportunity to get certified through the “Get Certified” sessions. Not only will you learn important information to help you be the best teacher possible, you’ll demonstrate dedication to your craft and your students.

This guide just scratches the surface of why the 2018 convention is sure to be one to remember. What are you most excited about? See you in the Windy City soon.
