5 Ways We Protect What Matters Most on Picture Day

Safety doesn’t start with the camera—it starts with our people and processes

Picture Day should feel fun, easy, and memorable. Behind the scenes, we work hard to make sure it’s also safe and secure—for every child, every time.

Here are five ways we do that.

1. Background-checked photographers

Every Lifetouch photographer is an employee—not a contractor—and is required to pass a background check. By employing our photographers directly, we maintain strict oversight, enforce our code of conduct, and uphold the highest level of professionalism and child safety.

That means schools and families can feel confident about who is working with their students.

2. Secure access to student photos

Families access their child’s images through a unique, individualized security code. They can only access their own child’s images through secure systems designed to protect personal information.

If a family chooses not to claim their images, they are securely deleted according to comply with data retention policies. We do not retain unclaimed images indefinitely.

3. Strict data protection practices

From ordering to storage, we follow established data privacy laws and security protocols to protect student information.

4. Trusted partnerships focused on safety

We partner with organizations dedicated to child safety, including programs like SmileSafe® ID cards to support families in emergencies.

5. Systems designed for schools—not shortcuts

Our technology avoids risky practices like sharing files through email or unsecured drives. Instead, schools and families use secure, purpose-built platforms.

We use a secure, cloud-based upload system to transmit images directly to our Lifetouch-owned lab.

Why it matters

Safety isn’t just one step—it’s a system. From the people we hire to the technology we build, every decision is designed to protect students and give families peace of mind.

Picture Day is about smiles—but safety is always part of the picture.
